So, after divorcing her cheating husband, Lauren searched for nothing special and she thought she found it when she landed a job as a waitress in a biker bar in Carnal. It was perfect: a nothing job in a nowhere bar in Nowheresville.
Then Tatum Jackson walked in. Part-owner of the bar, he took one look at high-class Lauren and wanted nothing to do with her. And he made this known, loudly.
Tate’s angry insults seared in her brain, Lauren decides the feeling is mutual and she doesn’t want anything to do with the gloriously handsome Tate Jackson. The clash of the bartender and barmaid begins but, even though Tate makes his change of mind clear (in biker-speak, a language Lauren is not fluent in), Lauren is intent on going her own way.
Until a serial killer hits Carnal and Lauren finds out Tate isn’t a bartender, he’s a bounty hunter. He stakes his claim for Lauren before he goes on the hunt for a killer but Laurie doesn’t speak biker nor does she understand bounty hunters and Tate comes back from the hunt to find his old lady has moved on.
Life throws curveball after curveball at Laurie and Tate as secrets are revealed, women are brutally murdered, Tate leads Lauren to special and Laurie tries to find her inner biker babe.'
Right so Sweet Dreams is about Lauren and her journey of finding herself. After finding her douchebag of a husband cheating on her with her best friend, she divorces his ass and goes on the road with no real idea of where she's headed, she simply drifts. Enter Carnal. Carnal is the nicest, funniest and scariest town you could ever hope to visit. It's a biker town, way out of Lauren's comfort zone coming from the suburbs, but she feels like something is pulling her here and so decides to stay. Applying for a waitressing job at 'Bubba's' (cool name) a biker bar, Lauren starts setting up her new life in the wonderful town of Carnal. Lauren was a great protagonist, although there were times you wanted to shake her you couldn’t help but connect with her. Despite what she’s been through you can’t help but admire her strong will and determination to move on, many women would crumble. I loved her sassy attitude, kind nature and big heart it makes for an awesome contrast between her and Tate. The manner in which she goes about finding her 'inner biker babe' is really freaking hilarious. We meet many interesting and intriguing characters. Such as Krystal, Jim-Billy, Bubba, Twyla, Wendy, Sunny, Shambles (Shambala), Betty and Ned. These characters are straight up hilarious at times, and you can't help but wish you could meet them for real. Although Kristen illustrates very effectively how rough a town Carnal can be (it IS a biker town after all guys), she also beautifully portrays a town that's like one big family, looking out for one another and pulling together in good times and bad. The more you read, the more you fall in love with the small town and its residents, you can't help but crave to see the place yourself (it’s on my bucket list).
For me the best thing about the entire book is Tate *sigh*. Tate Jackson is a hot biker, part-time barman, badass bounty hunter, awesome father and a full time macho man alpha male. Now to say Lauren’s and Tate’s first encounter doesn’t exactly go well is a bit of an understatement…
“Jesus, Krys, maybe you wanna talk to me before you hire some sorry-ass, old, fat, suburban bitch to drag around our goddamned bar?” I stopped and had to put a hand to the wall to hold myself up.
Tate ignored me. “You want sweet dreams, lose the attitude and you might find I’ll give you reason to have them.”
Now obviously their not so very god start at the beginning means we get to watch a lot of foreplay, and boy is it hot! You can practically feel the chemistry sizzling between them, and it has you biting your nails in anticipation for when the fireworks will finally explode. I admire Kristen for making the romance believable and REAL. It wasn’t all heart and flowers, this was real life, with real emotions and real situations. There were arguments, fights and passion. I don’t know about you but I can’t stand romances that happen really quickly and then literally have a HEA. I like a romance to have fire, passion, and real chemistry you can practically feel, you know something strong that allows the reader to connect with the characters, something that gives you goose bumps! And that’s exactly what Kristen delivers between Lauren and Tate. Right from the start you’re rooting for them, it has you holding your breath the whole time because you just don’t know which way it’s gonna go, even after they get together, it’s just such a passion filled, explosive relationship that it has you craving your own Tate Jackson.
“You said you were waitin’ for something special and he took away your chance to figure out that you were carryin’ it with you all this time. You are special, Laurie.”
Awe I absolutely adored Jonas, he is definitely my second favourite character. He is one of the sweetest, funniest and cutest kids ever. He really is the mini me Tate, which should be a little unnerving but really it’s just freaking hilarious. I loved how he instantly liked Lauren, their relationship was sweet and I loved their little bit of banter…
“You’re Dad’s girlfriend. If a dad’s girlfriend is hot, she’s always a milf,” Jonas told me. “Is that a rule?” I asked. “Yeah, one I just made up,” he returned. “You can’t just make things up,” I told him. “Sure you can,” he retorted. “Anyway, a girlfriend could turn into a stepmom and a stepmom is a kinda mom so she can also be a milf.” Tate pushed the door open, held it for Jonas and I to precede him and he muttered as I went by, “He’s got you there, Ace.”
