Kicked out of their foster homes because they suffer the 'eighteen disease' with nothing but a hundred dollar check from the government and a pat on the back, they're forced to rely on a system that failed them miserably.
So they sit. They sit inside Social Services, waiting for their social workers to call their names and offer them the miracle they know will never come but they sit anyway because they have nowhere else to go, no other options on their very literal and figurative empty plates.
But as they sit, they notice the other. Although captivated, they each come to the conclusion that life is complicated enough without throwing in a boiling tension that can't ever be acted upon because they're both too busy thinking about where their next meal will come from but when their names are called and both are placed on a year long waiting list for permanent housing, suddenly relying on each other seems like a very viable plan B.
And, oh, how lovely Plan B's can be.
Well, except for the psycho from Harper's past that haunts her and, oh, yeah, there's the little issue that neither of them knows they're in love with the other.
Needless to say, Callum & Harper's life just got a bit more complicated.”
I was sitting next to one of the most beautiful girls I’d ever seen in my entire life. She was so intriguing; I could actually feel the sweat dripping down the back of my neck at the effort it was taking to keep from staring at her.
It is one of the sweetest books you could ever read, but it’s also one of the saddest, gut-wrenching books ever. Meeting in social services, the sparks fly right off the bat for Callum and Harper and you can’t help but start rooting for them and following them on their journey. In a world as hard and cold as ours, Callum and Harper learnt the hard way that the only people you can rely on are yourselves that is until they meet each other. Chewed up and spit out by the system that is supposed to protect them, they form a bond and decide it is better to be together than alone. It’s sad how despite their instant attraction they form a friendship instead because they each know the fear of losing the one person who is there for you, who cares for you is far greater. But oh what a beautiful friendship it is guys. Their relationship is one of the most utterly adorable, sweetest, cutest and lovable relationships ever.
One day, you and I are gonna wake up and be alright. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but one day. One day. I promise you.
The constant dance around how they felt for each other is infuriating and yet refreshing, as it is not your typical kind of ‘girl meets boy’ or ‘love at first sight’. The more time they spend together the more their feelings develop, making their love believable and realistic. This is not a love based on attraction and lust; it goes so much deeper than that. Their feelings for one another are developed beautifully, Amelie orchestrates their little ‘tango’ amazingly so there’s no way you can be annoyed with how long it takes for them to get together. The near misses with their feelings coming out literally make your heart ache, and it actually made me cry when at one point we thought it was too late for them. Amelie’s character development is done so subtly the progress of Callum and Harper’s relationship is simply wonderful, she works it just the right amount. It’s nice to come across a novel that doesn’t overdo it, because that can really put a damper on things. The flow of the book is perfect, when they finally do get together…WOW! Can you say FIREWORKS? It’s just so heart-wrenching and beautiful it left me in a puddle of goo; I mean we needed that HEA as a reader just as much as they did as characters.
I give this book 5 well deserved stars, and recommend to everyone. It's one of those books that stays with you, it leaves an impression and if an author can accomplish that, well then my friends you know you just can't go wrong. If you love a good book with strong willed characters, beautiful friendships, awesome character development, a look inside very real social issues and a love so passionate it leaves you all tingly then this is it.
